Cedar Rapids Area Practical Shooters:

Shooters

What a turn out for the July match!!! We had 48 shooters total by my

count. We had a good crew on Saturday for set up, and the match ran

fairly well considering the heat. I want to thank EVERYONE that pitched

in to help from set up to tear down. Again, our Match Directors have

all done a great job this year. The MD's for each match are listed on

our website. When you are at our next match, find that person and tell

them thanks for a job well done.

Something that comes to mind for all shooters, both new and experienced

alike, in your spare time, grab the USPSA rule book and pick a

particular chapter/section and browse through it. Having a basic

understanding of the rules will make your experience as a shooter more

fulfilling. You don't have to read the entire thing, but try to at

least grasp the basic scoring procedures, equipment rules for the

division you are shooting in, and of course, the safety rules and

guidelines. Rule books are usually available at registration or on-line

at www.uspsa.org , or here rules index, and  pdf version and yes, they are free.

For new shooters especially, in your spare time at home, find a safe

area with NO ammunition in that area and work on the basics of gun

handling. By that I mean, the simple tasks such as holstering safely,

clearing a simulated "hot" weapon, malfunction clearing, movement from

A to B with your muzzle in a safe direction AND your finger indexed

down the side of the frame, etc.... These skills are not overly

complicated, but do require repetitive training so that it becomes

second nature once the timer goes off. I can't emphasize enough how

hard our Range Officers work to keep you the competitor and the other folks on the range safe.

Safety has to be our #1 priority!

With the number of shooters we are currently having, our "staff" needs

help. If we ask you to "score" for the RO, please jump in and help. We

are not asking you to make the scoring call on the target, but to

simply record the hits, misses, penalties, etc... on the score sheet.

If you have never done it before, we'll help you get started, and it

frees up one of our folks to take a break for a squad or two. The more

help we have, the smoother and more efficient the match runs.

I hope to see you all this coming weekend. Set up for the match is this

Saturday from 9am until noon. Details regarding this and other matches

in the area can be found on our website, www.cruspsa.org .
